You need to have an active registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You also need to gain entitlement to work in the UK. If you’re under 30 and an Australian or New Zealand citizen you’re likely to be eligible for a Youth Mobility Visa which will allow you to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years.
The majority of vacancies are in the larger cities where the majority of hospitals are located including, London (and surrounding areas), Bristol, Oxford, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton.
Occupational Therapists are only required to hold HCPC registration.
The more experience, the better! A minimum of 18 months to 2 years experience is preferable, however, if you have 12 months experience and excellent references you should be able to secure locum work.
The length of Occupational Therapy locum roles generally ranges from 3 months to 12 months. You can choose a locum that suits your plans. If you are looking to work and travel you’re best to go with shorter-term locums.
Positions in the UK are categorised in Bands. As a band 6 Occupational Therapist, you can expect to be paid £23-26 per hour. As a Band 7 Occupational Therapist, you can expect to be paid £27 – £33 per hour.
Generally, locums in and around London do not offer accommodation. Commonly hospitals out of London offer accommodation with prices varying from £300 to £700 a month, depending on the amenities.
