What do I need to do to work in the UK?

You need to an active registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You also need to gain entitlement to work in the UK. If you’re under 30 and an Australian or New Zealand citizen you’re likely to be eligible for a Youth Mobility Visa which will allow you to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years.

In which locations are the majority of roles?

The majority of vacancies are in the larger cities where the majority of hospitals are located including, London (and surrounding areas), Bristol, Oxford, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton.

Are Radiographers required to hold registration other than HCPC registration?

Radiographers are only required to hold HCPC registration. If you’re a Mammographer, you must hold a post-grad Certification of Mammography.

Is it better to have 12 months or 2 years of experience when first arriving in the UK to locum?

The more experience, the better! A minimum of 18 months to 2 years experience is preferable,  however, if you have 12 months experience and excellent references you should be able to secure locum work.

What is the average length of a locum?

The length of Radiography locum roles generally range from 3 months to 12 months. You can choose a locum that suits your plans. If you are looking to work and travel you’re best to go with shorter-term locums.

What is the average hourly pay rate for a Band 6 and Band 7 Radiographer?

Positions in the UK are categorised in Bands. Band 6 Radiographers generally have a minimum of 6 months experience, and a Band 7 Radiographers generally have a minimum of 6 months CT and MRI experience. As a band 6 Radiographer, you can expect to be paid £23-26 per hour. As a Band 7 Radiographer, you can expect to be paid £27 –  £33 per hour.

 Do hospital-based locums offer accommodation?

Generally, locums in and around London do not offer accommodation. Commonly hospitals out of London offer accommodation with prices varying from £300 to £700 a month, depending on the amenities.

At what time of year is there more locum work available?

While demand is high year round, it is especially when it is the European Summer… when everyone wants to take a holiday!
